Recreated in 2016 by Ernie Ball as theirĤ0 th Anniversary String Ray Bass and named "Old Smoothie". One-off Black PUP with 10 pole pieces especially made for Sterling Ball by Leo Fender.

B001018.Body 8 July 1976 written in pencil along with "MAN". Original owner by Leo Fender and used on Johnny Carson Show. Was originally used by an Australian supplier as a See "Picture Gallery 4" and "Rare Basses Gallery". Presented to Carle Radle by Eric Clapton and usedĭuring 1977 tour of Japan. "Radio" knobs latter replaced with metal. Came in a set which included a Guitar (set number 7.see above). Given as a set (Bass and Guitar) to one of six Music Man sales reps at that time.

Sting Ray Bass, although Rosewood was initially used for fretless Basses, fretted Rosewood was not introduced as an option to Maple necks until late 1979. Strings are top loaded. Bodies are contoured and not slab. On the other hand, the Sabre Bass has always had the serial number located on the bridge since its introduction mid 1979. The bridge was blank. From Sept 1978 the non-epoxied preamp gradually replaced the black epoxied preamp. However, it's not unusual to find the black epoxy in early Janġ979 Basses. Strings are loaded through the body but are top loaded from circa latter part of 1982-early 1983.
